What is aromatherapy?
The National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy has defined aromatherapy as “the art and science of utilising naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonise and promote the health of body, mind, and spirit.”
The holistic healing treatment uses natural plant extracts to enhance health and wellbeing. It uses essential oils to improve the health of the body, mind and overall health. It’s been around for thousands of years with ancient cultures in China, Egypt and India using aromatic plant components in resins, balms, and oils. They were used for religious and medical reasons and had both physical and psychological benefits.
It’s thought to work by stimulating smell receptors in your nose, which further sends messages through the nervous system and to the limbic system - the part of the brain that controls emotions. Have you ever smelt something pleasant and found yourself in a good mood? Exactly.
